cp&L Carolina Power & Light Company Shearon Harris Energy & Environmental Center Route 1. Box 327 New Hdl, North Carolina 27562 Serial: ESS-85-507 APR 2 31985 Mr. Charles Wakild Regional Supervisor N. C. Division of Environmental Management 7225 Wrightsville Avenue Wilmington, NC 28403 RE: BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT NPDES PERMIT NO. NC0007064
Dear Mr. Wakild:
In accordance with the notification requirements of NPDES Permit No.
NC0007064, this is to inform you that Carolina Power & Light Company's (CP&L)
Brunswick Steam Electric Plant operated its circulating water system pumps on Unit No. 2 with less than two fine mesh screens from 14:15 on March 27,1985 to 17:07 on March 28,1985 and from 00:30 on April 12,1985 to 04:30 on April 13,1985.
On March 27, the cooling fan for the 2B circulating water pump lube oil cooler failed. This failure was a result of a blown transformer that supplies power to the fan.
When the fan failed, the lubricating oil temperature increased until the oil temperature from the circulating water pump motor bearings reached 180 F. At that time, the 2C circulating water pump was started and the 2B pump was shut down to prevent damage to the motor bearings. The transformer was replaced on March 28,1985 and the system resumed proper operation.
On April 12, the 2B pump was taken out of service while a torn fine mesh screen was replaced. Normal operation was resumed on April 13.
If there are any questions with respect to this notification, please contact R. K. Miller at (919) 836-7185.
Yours very truly, Gncm1 Li;ted by
