Dear Mr. Wakild:

As required by the NPDES Permit for this facility, this is to provide you with notification that Brunswick Unit No. 1 was operated with less than two fine mesh screens. On September 3,1984, the 1B pump, which is equipped with one of the two fine mesh screens, was taken out of service to check the differential pressure measuring device. This measuring device controls the speed at which the screen turns to be cleaned. The pump was out of service from 13:45 to 18:25.

On September 5, 1984 the 1D pump, which is similarly equipped with a fine mesh screen, was taken out of service for the replacement of a temporary bar rack. The pump was out from 04:47 to 12:37 On September 6, 1981 the 1D pump was taken out of service to check the differential pressure measuring device. The pump was out of service from 09:59 to 18: 15.

On September 28, 1984 Unit No. 2, while not in service, had a circulating water system fine-meshed screen pump in operation to meet radwaste needs and to maintain the desired discharge canal level. It became necessary to pump additional circulating water system flow and a second pump was placed in operation. This pump was not equipped with fine mesh screens and remained in-service for the period 08:45 to 13:20.

It has been our practice to perform routine, preventive maintenance on the intake structure and fine mesh screens while the circulating water system pumps remained in service. This practice is being reviewed and will be appropriately revised and reported to you by November 30, 1984. It should be l recognized that operational problems or the need for corrective maintenance due to reasons beyond our control may occur such that a fine mesh screen may have to be temporarily removed from service while the pump continues in operation. These potential situations will be considered during the above review.

August, there was one sample taken from the low volume waste retention basin. The oil and grease analysis, although.not above the daily maximum was

! above the monthly average, because only one sample was taken. This was the only discharge during the month._ The-analysis was 16 ag/l and the limit is 15
