[ \ 4.0 Duct Test Description U

4.5 Test No. III was conducted on April 4, 1974. The

.

test involved the vacuum pressure testing of a 30" x 30" x 10' - 8" long duct specimen with 1" x 1" x 1/8" angle stiffeners at 32 in. spacing. The test was carried out according to the procedure given in Appendix A.

5.0 Duct Test Results 5.3 Test ~No. III ,

C 5.3.1 Dect Specimen: 30" x 30" duct, stiffeners at 32" spacing. The duct was pressurized in 0.25 psi increments to failure. At pressures up to 2.0 psi, some twisting and bowing of the interior stiffeners was observed. At 2.21 psi, one leg of the first interior stiffener began to buckle at midspan. The duct did not collapse, howev'er, and continued to hold pressure until 2.30 psi when the other stiffeners buckled and the duct skin collapsed.

l l

4 6.0 Conclusions 6.5 The results of the vacuum pressure test on the 30" x 30" duct specimen. representing the Category II l

ducts showed that the failure pressure of the test specimen was 1.92 times greater than the maximum pressure differential applied to the ducts follow-

, ing a loss of coolant accident. Since the seismic

, loading on the ducts is small, a margin of safety j of 1.9 is considered to be reasonable and adequate -l to insure the integrity of the system. l 7.0 Corrective Action e

p 7.7 The corrective action required for Category II ducts is similar to that outlined in Sections 7.1 through 7.4 and Section 7.6 of this report.

8.O Closecut Action The specific closeout action taken in the modification of all reactor building cool air supply ducts is summarized below. (Refer to Figs. 1 through 11 for stiffener and l

hanger numbers and locations). Dwg. 6600-M-198, sheet 2 was issued to cover all duct modifications.

i x_s/ I. Purpose of Test -

.

The purpose of this test is to observe the behavior of a typical 30" x 30" x 10' - 8" section of the reactor building' cool air supply ducting under vacuum pressure, and to determine from this behavior whether or not further modifications to the existing 30" x 30" cool air supply ducts in the reactor building are required.

c II. Test Description The test shall consist of applying increments of vacuum pressure to the test specimen which is shown in Figurrs 1 and 2. The pressure shall be increased in increments of 0.25 psi until the specimen fails

>

The test specimen consists of a 10' - 8" long straight section of 30" x 30" ducting with 1" x 1" x 1/8" angle stiffeners around the circumference of the duct at 32" spacing.

III. Test Preparation

. l The test specimen shall be in the horizontal position I resting on support blocks located as shown in Figure 1.

The test specimen shall be leak tested before testing.

An internal pressure of no greater than 1/2 psi shall be used during leak testing.

2 l

- . -

.. ... - ._ . - - .-

.

-

.

. .

Vacuum pressure in the test specimen shall be measured using a mercury U tube manometer.

IV. Data Acquisition The test specimen shall be pressurized in 1/4 psi in-crements until duct collapse is attained. At each in-crement of pressure, a visual examination of the test specimen shall be made and any evidence of stress con- c centration or other unusual behavior shall be recorded.

V. Test Report A test report shall be prepared showing all pertinent

data and test results.
