REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR SECTION 2.3.2, CONTAINMENT FOR THE HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION

Dear Mr. Joyce:

By letter dated August 18, 2009, as supplemented by letter dated January 23, 2009, Public Service Enterprise Group Nuclear, LLC, submitted an application pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulation Part 54 for renewal of Operating License No. NPF-57 for the Hope Creek Generating Station. The staff of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) is reviewing this application in accordance with the guidance in NUREG-1800, Standard Review Plan for Review of License Renewal Applications for Nuclear Power Plants. During its review, the staff has identified areas where additional information is needed to complete the review. The staffs requests for additional information are included in the Enclosure. Further requests for additional information may be issued in the future.

Items in the enclosure were discussed with John Hufnagel and other members of your staff during a telephone call on March 11, 2010, and a mutually agreeable date for the response is within 30 days from the date of this letter. REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR SECTION 2.3.2 CONTAINMENT FOR THE HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION RAI 2.3.2.2-1 Containment Hydrogen Recombiner System The components in Table 2.3.2.2 identify a component type Fan Housing with an intended function Pressure Boundary. The license renewal drawing LR-M-58-1, Sheet 1, shows that the fan, identified as Blower AV-215, has its inlet and outlet connected to 3 inch stainless steel pipes. However, the drawing also shows that the entire fan housing is enclosed by another housing made of carbon steel (CS). Please provide the purpose of the enclosure around the fan and state whether it is within the scope of license renewal in accordance with 10 CFR 54.4(a), and if it is subject to aging management review in accordance with 10 CFR 54.21(a)(1).

RAI 2.3.3.4 -1 Containment Inerting and Purging system The referenced license renewal drawings LR-M-57-1, Sheet 1, and LR-M-76-1, Sheet 1, appear to show valve numbers V024, V025, and V026 on both drawings and that they are within the scope of license renewal. Please clarify if these valves are the same. If they are not, provide the purpose of the additional set of valves and if they are, then all are required to be within the scope of license renewal.
