September 19,1997 i STATUS REPORT SUSQUEHANNA ALLEGATIONS 97-A-OO49 and 97-A-0145 On September 18,1997 Jack Crienjak and Cliff Anderson called Martin Urban of PP&L (employee Concerns) regarding their internal investigation of the issues that are the subject of the subject allegation. Mr. Urban provided the following status information regarding their investigation.

The licensee estimates that it will take an additional two months for them to complete their investigation. Their investigation consists of four tasks that are discussed below that are at various stages of completion. The first task relates to the determination of computer data associated with the ESS transformer alarm test. They have essentially completed this task. They concluded that Unit 1 data is not reliable; however, Unit 2 data is reliable. They are doing a last verification of this conclusion.

The second task includes two issues. b). Determine if necessary computer points exist. -a c) Verify the reliability of the computer points, if they are available.

d) Interview PCOs, as necessary, to prove / disprove the allegation.

All of the above items are in process and remain open. The PP&L employee concerns program has a technical individual working at the Susquehanna site full time to address the above items. This task is controlling for the remaining two months to complete to l

complete the PP&L investigation.

The fourth task relates to alarm testing of the Rad Waste panelin the Rad Waste  ;

control room. For the Rad Waste panel alarm testing the allegation is that the ASOs l l did not perform the Rad Waste panel alarm testing as required. This task will address j i

the same type of a - d items that are identified in task 3 above; however, for Task 4 l

items a and b are comp!cte. Item c is in process. l l

1-i We asked Urban if Byram and Jones were aware of the details of this investigation and l if the could be contacted by the NRC without jeopardizing the PP&L investigation.

l Urban responded yes. I asked Urban if they could close out portions of their I investigation. He said he would think about it; however, some of the tasks are inter-related. Urban will be out of town but he can be reached,'during the week of September 22,1997.
