Subject:

Diagnostic interest in Radiological Waste Control Room Panel Test Computer Point On January 9,1998 I was approached by a Mr. Walker in the SSES cafeteria line. He asked me if the NRC had a position on the number of access points to the RCA and had I seen a working paper document that an HP matrix group was preparing. I explained to him that the NRC did not have a policy on the raw number of access points, but was interested in ALARA issues in general. I scanned the document that he handed me to read and returned it. I stated that I had previously not seen the document (note: it was in draft form and was not yet a PP&L document). He asked me if I would be interested in the outcome of this working group, explained that some SSES management had praised the effort  ;

involved in the document and expressed how hard it had been to sell some of the ideas in ,

the document. I told him that I was interested in the outcome of the work group and I asked him to let me know when the work was complete. I informed him that I would add a l

review of the outcome of the group to the things to be discussed with Mr. Ragland, for possible inclusion in his next inspection. Mr. Walker confided no allegation or specific l concern to me, requested no specific action from me, and I was left with no sense on urgency.

On my way up the stairs to the 4th floor, I noted that the plant manager (Mr. Kuzynski) was vraiting for a meeting to start. I asked him if he had a minute and he stated that he did. I told him of that I was made aware of the working group and stated that I would request Mr. Ragland to look at the issues in the working document as part of his normal core inspection. I stated that the issue was being noted to him (Mr. Kuzynski) in order to keep our lines of communication open. I communicated no sense of urgency and no Concern.

I related this issue to Mr. Anderson on 1/6/98, by telephone, stating that it was my conclusions that there were no allegations involved in this interaction. A copy of this memo was forwarded to Mr. Ragland and Mr. Vito, by email. This issue is being forwarded to Mr. vito to ensure that there is no outstanding related issue in the AMS, of which I am unaware.
