License Renewal for Salem and Hope Creek Follow Up Flag:        Follow up Flag Status:            Flagged Nuclear Regulatory Commission License Renewal for Salam 1 and 2 and Hope Creek Considering the location of these plants, the fact that they received a building permit in the first place can only be explained by a laisez faire leadership by the regulatory bodies at best, or gross neglect of responsibility at worst.
The plants are located on Artificial Island, so named because land was nonexistent at that location .The Island was built from dredge spoils from the Delaware River, Hydraulic Fill as you call it in the original documents.
The access road is elevated, bordered by the Delaware River on the left and swamp land on the right.
Borings into the soil up to 75 ft are described in 35 ft increments from sand to mud and gravel ending with the last layer called Vincentown formation.
Borings up to 100 ft revealed no solid rock.
All three reactors, auxiliary buildings and spent fuel pools are perched on cement pilings 70 ft deep.
Hydraulic fill can be dangerous in seismic activity due to the high susceptibility of the uncompacted cohesionelss soil accommodating liquefaction.. There exists a myriad of examples of toppled buildings due to hydraulic fill failures.
Yes, there was an Earthquake in Morris County New Jersey just recently and yes there is an earthquake fault In the Delaware River, which occasionally stirrers (latest July 1st 1999)
Is the operation of Salem Legal ? So ask the River keepers in various lawsuits under the leadership of Robert F.Kennedy Jr.
Congress, recognizing the profound impact of mans activity on the interrelations of all components of the natural Environment found the need to create the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA)
The purpose of this act was to prevent just the kind of destruction the Salem Plant commits against the
