The NJ Marine Mammal Stranding Center did not take possession of the specimen for potential necropsy due to the advanced state of decomposition. The specimen has been held for study pending direction from NOAA/NMFS. This incidental take is authorized under Biological Opinion GAR-2020-02842.

Please submit all turtle necropsy results (including sex and stomach contents) to NMFS upon receipt.

During routine inspection and cleaning, Salem Yard Crew personnel retrieved a deceased Kemps ridley sea turtle from Salem circulator intake. Salem Unit Control and PSEG Nuclear Environmental Affairs personnel were notified. After contacting PSEG Nuclear Environmental Affairs (NEA) personnel, Environmental Consulting Services Inc. (ECSI) personnel verified species identification and began processing of the specimen. At the direction of PSEG NEA, the deceased specimen was transported back to the ECSI office, and placed in refrigeration, awaiting further direction on final disposition from NMFS.

Description of animal:

Specimen was in very poor condition at the time of retrieval, with damage to the head and neck, in addition to the effects of advanced decomposition. External tags were not found, and an internal PIT tag was not indicated.

Salem SGS Incidental Take Report - Sea Turtle Attachment 1 Dorsal view of a deceased, Kemps ridley sea turtle, collected from Salem CWIS intake on 06-20-2023 by Salem Yard crew personnel. Specimen was in a state of advanced decomposition, and evidence of damage was observed to the head and neck in the form of bruising and a minor laceration (06/20/2023).

A ventral view of the specimen, showing the condition of the plastron. Discoloration of the skin, missing scutes, and foul odor indicated an advanced stage of decomposition (06/20/2023).

The existence of distinct pores near the margins of the inframarginal scutes (identified by the red circles in photo) on both sides of the plastron, verify the identity of the specimen as a Kemps ridley turtle [06/20/2023].
