Hello, Attached are my comments regarding the license renewal of the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Fission Reactors in Salem NJ. I live about 15 miles from the plants, and can see the cooling towers from a few blocks north of my home. I have lived in Newark for 25 years and have followed the shut downs and cooling water leaks during that time. I am a PhD in Electrical Engineering specializing in energy technology.

I oppose the relicensing of these reactors for the following reasons.

1. The site is not geologically stable, being a man-made island without bedrock. A moderate earthquake could liquify the base and allow the cool or colling towers to sink. Even a small amount of sinking would break pipes and allow loss of cooling as well as possible radiation leakage.

2. There are massive amounts of fish killed daily by the water intakes. I know someone who used to inspect this for the State and said they found many species clogging the intakes. This is not acceptable.

3. As one of the oldest reactors in the nation, it suffers from significant wear and degradation of critical components. I have not seen any effort to widely replace much of the hardware.

4. There is still no approved or reasonable storage for spent fuel rods or contaminated reactor cores. Until there is a safe storage facility, no further waste should be generated.
