South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) submits this letter in accordance with 10CFR21.21(a)(2) as an interim report of an identified defect potentially associated with a substantial safety hazard.

On April 28,1996, Nonconformance Notice (NCN) 5415 was initiated to address the nozzle weld defects in the Chemical and Volume Control System connections at the reactor coolant pump seal injection line nozzles and Com sonent Cooling Water System connections at the reactor coolant pump thermal aarrier heat exchanger I j

inlet and outlet nozzles.

The subject condition 76 N SCE&G suspects that weabears to beinathe flaws existe heneric originalhardware defect nozzle welds in manufacturing.

supplied by Westinghouse.

SCE&G has taken the following actions:

All nine (9) nozzles were inspected. Six (6) nozzles revealed indications of cracking and were repaired using the TIG welding process, and satisfactorily reinspected.

The original equipment manufacturer has been contacted.

SCE&G expects to complete the evaluation of 10CFR21 reportability prior to September 1,1996.
