NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave., NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Site: www.nrc.gov Blog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov No. II-11-022 April 18, 2011 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 562-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 562-4416 NRC TO PRESENT RESULTS OF LICENSEE PERFORMANCE REVIEW AT GLOBAL NUCLEAR FUEL-AMERICAS IN WILMINGTON Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials will meet with management of Global Nuclear Fuel - Americas, LLC in Wilmington, N.C., on Tuesday, April 26 to discuss the results of a licensee performance review for the companys commercial nuclear fuel fabrication plant.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. EDT in the Azalea Coast Room A of the Fisher Student Center at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, which is located at 601 South College Road. The meeting will be open to members of the public and the news media. NRC officials will be available following the business portion of the meeting to answer questions from those in attendance.

The NRC staff assessed performance at Global Nuclear Fuel-Americas during a period beginning May 23, 2009 and ending December 31, 2010 in the areas of safety operations, radiological controls, facility support and special topics. The NRC staff review determined that Global continued to conduct its activities safely and securely, protecting public health and the environment.

However, in the area of safety operations, the staff found that management attention is still warranted to improve the identification and implementation of safety controls. The NRC will continue to conduct additional inspections in safety operations to access the effectiveness of Globals corrective actions.

The NRC continually reviews regulatory safety performance at Global Nuclear and at each of the nations other licensed nuclear facilities, said Victor McCree, administrator of the NRC Region II office in Atlanta. This meeting is an opportunity for us to discuss safety performance with the company and with residents in the area.

A copy of the NRC letter detailing the review is publicly available online in the NRCs Agency-wide Document Access and Management System, www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.

The ML number is ML110660371.
