Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a virtual public meeting on April 23 to discuss the 2023 safety performance of Duke Energys six nuclear power plants. The plants, spread across the Carolinas, include Oconee, Robinson, and Catawba in South Carolina, and McGuire, Brunswick, and Harris in North Carolina.

The meeting will be held from 6 -7 p.m. Eastern time on Microsoft Teams. The conference number for those without access to Teams is 301-576-2978, passcode 250834548#. NRC staff responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the sites, will be available to answer questions at the meeting.

The NRC concluded that six Duke Energy sites operated safely in 2023. Five of the plants remained under the NRCs normal level of oversight for the year. The Harris plant, however, was under increased NRC oversight during part of the year due to a security-related finding discovered in the second quarter. The NRC completed its supplemental inspection to review the plants corrective actions in December 2024 and the plant has returned to the normal level of NRC oversight.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, equal with the safety significance of the issues involved. If an inspection finding or performance indicator has more than a very low safety significance, the NRC increases its oversight.

The annual assessment letters for the Duke Energy plants, including upcoming inspection plans, are available on the NRC website. Current performance information for the sites is available on the NRC website and updated quarterly.
