Viktoria Mitlyng, 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil, 630-829-9663 NRC Schedules Open House to Discuss Byron Generating Station Performance Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2023 safety performance of the Byron Generating Station during an open house June 12. The two-unit plant, operated by Constellation Energy Generation, is located in Byron, Illinois, approximately 17 miles south-southwest of Rockford.
The meeting will be held from 5-6 p.m. Central time at the Byron Community Room, 131 N. Washington St. in Byron. The NRC staff responsible for plant inspection and oversight, including the resident inspectors based at the site, will be available to answer questions and provide information of interest to the community.
The open house format allows more interaction with the NRC staff and facilitates one-on-one and small-group discussions. It also gives flexibility to nearby residents and others who want to attend.
The NRC determined that Byron operated safely during 2023. All inspection findings and performance indicators were green or very low safety significance. As a result, Byron remains under the NRCs normal level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.
The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.
Plant inspections are performed by two NRC resident inspectors and inspection specialists from the agencys Region III office in Lisle, Illinois.
The annual assessment letter for Byron is on the NRC website. Current performance information is also available and updated on a quarterly basis.
