Dave Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC Names New Resident Inspector at Harris Nuclear Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has selected Maurice Kay as its new resident inspector at the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant in New Hill, North Carolina. Kay joins Senior Resident Inspector Peter Boguszewski at the plant, operated by Duke Energy.

Kay joined the NRC in 2023 as a project engineer though the Resident Inspector Development Program in the Region II office. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Before joining the NRC, Kay was a senior nuclear engineer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and an electrical engineer at the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Atlantic, both in Norfolk, Virginia.

Maurice brings a wealth of hands-on experience and a keen eye for detail, which are vital for this important role," said NRC Region II Administrator Laura Dudes. "His impressive background at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, combined with the rigorous training hes received at the NRC, makes him a great addition to our resident inspector team at the Harris plant.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear power plant has at least two NRC resident inspectors who monitor day-to-day operations at the plant. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring significant projects, and interacting with plant workers and the public.
