Dave Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC Schedules Public Meeting to Discuss VC Summer Nuclear Power Plant Performance Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a hybrid public meeting April 22 to discuss the 2023 safety performance of the Virgil C. Summer nuclear power plant. The plant, located in Jenkinsville, South Carolina, is operated by Dominion Energy.

The meeting will be held from 6-7 p.m. Eastern at the McCrorey-Liston School of Technology, 1978 State Hwy 215 in Blair, South Carolina. The public can also access the meeting via Microsoft Teams or by phone. The telephone conference number is 301-576-2978, passcode 467716138#. NRC staff responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to answer questions at the meeting.

The NRC concluded that VC Summer operated safely in 2023. However, the plant has been under increased NRC oversight since the fourth quarter of 2023, due to a finding of low to moderate safety significance related to the failure of a fuel oil pipe on an emergency diesel generator. The NRC completed its supplemental inspection to review the plants corrective actions in March 2024.

The final report has not been issued, but the initial findings and corrective actions will be discussed during the meeting.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, equal with the safety significance of the issues involved. If an inspection finding or performance indicator has more than a very low safety significance, the NRC increases its oversight.

The annual assessment letter for the VC Summer plant, including upcoming inspection plans, is available on the NRC website. Current performance information for the site is available on the NRC website and updated quarterly.
