Dave Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC Schedules Hybrid Public Meeting to Discuss Safety Assessment of Urenco USA Facility Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a hybrid public meeting May 29 to discuss its safety assessment of the Urenco USA uranium enrichment facility in Eunice, New Mexico.
The event will run from 6:30-8 p.m. Mountain time at the Lea County Event Center, 5101 North Lovington Highway in Hobbs, New Mexico. Members of the public and media can attend in person, participate virtually via Microsoft Teams, or join by phone at 301-576-2978, passcode 880639709#.
NRC staff will present their findings from the two-year safety assessment of the facility, followed by a question-and-answer session. The assessment covered the period from Jan. 1, 2022, to Dec. 31, 2023, and included reviews of safety operations, radiation controls, facility support, safeguards and other areas.
The NRC staff found that Urenco conducted its activities safely and met NRC requirements for protecting workers, nearby residents, and the environment. During the assessment, the NRC identified several safety violations, with Urenco self-reporting and correcting the two most significant.
As a result of the violations, the NRC will conduct additional inspections over the next two years to ensure Urenco fully addresses the issues and prevents future occurrences.
A copy of the NRC's assessment letter including details about the assessment is available on the agency's website.
