Facility Licensee Emergency Classification Consumers Power Co. Notification of Unusual Event i Big Rock Point 1 Alert Charlevoix. Michigan Site Area Emergency Dockets: 50-155 General Emergency X Not Applicable
Subject:
DECISION TO PERMANENTLY SHUT DOWN Consumers Energy announced on June 11, 1997, that it would permanently cease operation of the Big Rock Point Nuclear Plant on August 30, 1997.
In announcing the decision, the licensee reported that the plant's small generating capacity of 67 megawatts and future im)rovements that would be needed make continued operation too expensive to )e economical.
As a result of the decision Big Rock Point will be shut down three years before the expiration of its operating license in 2000. Big Rock Point began operations in September 1962.
The State of Michigan will be informed.
l The licensee issued a news release on its decision at 10:00 a.m. (CDT) on l June 11, 1997. This information is current as of that time.
