) /(V.. POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information

presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

! Facility:

l Consumers Power Company, Big Rock Point (DN 50-155), Charlevoix, MI f l

Subject:

l CONTAMINATION OF DEMINERALIZED WATER SYSTEM i The licensee notified the region that the plant demineralized water system was contaminated from the spent fuel system due to an apparent leakage path through check valves. The licensee is involved in an investigation and evaluation program to identify the leak path, deter-mine the use of the demineralized water, and to establish any contami-nation levels.

All plant employees, except one on vacation, have been interviewed by the licensee. It was determined that approximately 25 gallons of -

demineralized water were removed from the plant for personal use in batteries and steam irons. All but 5 gallons have been recovered. a The licensee investigation of the remaining 5 gallons is continuing. "!

' At the present time no significant contamination appears to have occurred onsite or offsite. The maximum concentration measured in batteries filled with plant demineralized water was a fraction of MPC for '

l ( _ Cesium-137 or Cobalt 60.

The demineralized water system has been caution-tagged to prevent unauthorized use, and a formal sampling program is being developed.

All possible site uses of the water are being determined, sampled and analyzed.

A press release has been made by the licensee.

l The licensee has discussed the incident with the Michigan Department j of Public Health.

A Region III inspector will be at the site next Monday for a routine inspection and he will followup on this event.
