' Sbbject: FIRE IN A CONTAMINATED AREA 0F THE FACILITY

  • i At about 8:30 a.m. on November 25, 1987, a fire occurred as a result of spontaneous combdttfon of slightly contaminated zircalloy in a vacuum cleaner. The zircalloy was contaminated with uraniun-235. The operator, using the vacuum cleaner to clean c>mponents, immediately placed the cleaner into a fume hood. Smoke from the fire made I

'* rocci and exhaust stack air samples. Airborne contamination in the room was determined te be about 0.4% of the 10 CFR Part 20, Appendix B, Table 1 limit for uranium-235.

P.4ck' releases were determined to be about 0.1% of the 10 CFR Part 20, Appendix B, Table 2 limit for uranium-235. The release lasted for approximately 15-20 minutes.

The NRC received initial notification of this incident by telephone from the licensee at 9:25 a.m. on November 25, 1987.
