UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN T0' REPAIR INSTRUMENT GAS SYSTEM LEAK Th2 licensee conducted a manual shutdown of Susquehanna, Unit 2 to permit repairs to the instrument gas system in containment. The instrument gas system supplies pn:umatic power for operation of components inside containment such as the inboard tain steam isolation valves (MSIVs) and the safety relief valves. Following routine surveillance testing of the inboard MSIVs on December 10, 1986, indications of gas leakage were initially detected. During troubleshooting operations conducted late on December 11, 1986, the gas leak was confirmed while testing the B inboard MSIV. The valve was maintained closed and a unit shutdown was completed at 4:54 a.m. The lic nsee plans to repair the gas system and to restart the facility by Dectmber 14, 1986. Unit 1 continues normal operations at 100% power.

Th licensee has issued a press release describing the event and its restart plans.

An ENS call was also made by the licensee to inform NRC of its plans.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed.
