Radwaste Spill At 6:30 a.m. on October 22, 1986 approximately 3000 gallons of liquid radioactive waste was spilled on the floor of the Radwaste Building. The spill was contained in the Radwaste Building and there was no offsite release of radiation or personnel contami-nation. The spill occurred during routine processing of a set of liquid radioactive l

waste collection tanks when an isolation valve to the solid radwaste system "B" waste mixing tank leaked by. Approximately 8000 gallons of liquid radwaste filled the mixing tank and overflowed onto the floor., The' spill covered approximately 1000 Ft 2 of floor in the waste tank mixing. room and in the radwaste building basement where the liquid waste backed up through the floor drains. The spill was mostly contaminated water, but also included some crud and resin with an average contamination level of 25,000 DPM/100cm2 and a maximum contact reading of 120 mR/hr. The liquid radwaste processing was terminated upon discovery of the spill, stopping the leakage. The spill l

has been cleaned up and decontamination of the affected areas is in progress.
