I am responding to your letter of April 16, 1987 on the recent request by Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) for. Commission

' authorization 25 percent power. to operate the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant at

. You commented on the r'equest and asked whether "this license is merely an interim license request or whether LILCO intends to continue 25-percent operation in the fall or indefinitely."

The Commission will not make a decision on the merits of-LILCO's request prior to affording all parties, including the  !

State and Suffolk County, an opportunity to have their views considered, a right conferred on them by the Commission's regula tions and the Atomic Energy Act. Until the Commission reaches a decision on the request, it would be inappropriate t'o 3 i comment on the merits of LILCO's proposal, i information, we are enclosing'a copy of LILCO's RecuestHowever, for your i for authorization to operate Shoreham at 25 percent power. .
