requirements of Limerick Generating-Station (LGS), Unit 1 l Technical Specifications (TS) Section 6.9.2 as required by  !

TS Section 3.3.7.10, " Loose-Part Detection System." TS

.Section 3.3.7.10 requires that with one or more of the required Loose-Part Detection System (LPDS) channels inoperable for more than 30 days, a Special Report must be prepared and submitted within 10 days outlining the cause of

'the malfunction and the plans for restoring the channel (s) to operable status.

On April 25, 1996, Unit 1 was operating at 88% power with power ascension in progress following a scheduled load drop.

During performance of procedure ST-6-107-590-1, " Daily Surveillance Log /OPCONS 1, 2, 3," a channel check was performed for the eight LPDS channels per TS Surveillance Requirement 4.3.7.10a. At 0215 hours0.00249 days <br />0.0597 hours <br />3.554894e-4 weeks <br />8.18075e-5 months <br /> on April 25, 1996, Operations personnel identified that the channel / detector

which monitors the acoustic level on the Control Rod Drive housing 02-31 was malfunctioning and was subsequently declared inoperable.

This channel malfunction has been isolated to its instrumentation contained within the inerted Unit 1 Primary Containment. A work order has been initiated to inspect the ,

Page Two instrumentation within the Primary Containment during the next Unit 1 outage of sufficient duration.

The malfunctioning channel / detector has no impact on plant operation and no interim corrective actions are necessary. j A supplement to this Special Report will be submitted once i the cause is determined and plans identified for restoring the channel to an operable status.
