The informition presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically c11 that is known by IE staff as of this date.

SUBJECT:

80M5 THREAT Region ill (Chicago) was notified by the Resident inspector at 8:35 a.m. (CDT) on July 27, 1981, that a bomb threat was received at 5: 10 p.m. (CDT) on July 24, 1981.

The telephone call was received at the central switchboard.

A female caller stated,

'There is a bomb in the power station," then hung up.

The County and State Police cnd the FBI were notified. The DeWitt County Sheriff's Department responded to the site and partic! pated in the search.

Site employees were notified and given the cption to leave.

The site was not evacuated and a search team was activated.

At 6: 17 p.m. on July 24, 1981, a simulated bomb was discovered in the sump pump essembly area on the 711' level of the Turbine Building by an assistant pipe fitter. The simulated bomb was a round metal sump pump' floatation bulb which had been painted block.

A piece of nylon' cord was taped to the top of the device.

Numerous other floatation bulbs were in the area being utilized as sparc parts.

The simulated bomb was turned over to the Supervisor of Security, Construction, who presently has the device in his office and plans to turn the device over to the FBI.

Numerous persons handled the device eliminating any. possibility of obtaining fingerprints.

The Resident inspector received the initial report of the bomb threat on Friday svening, but was not informed that a simulated bomb was found until July 27, at 1:33 p.m.

The Resident inspector immediately contacted Region Ill.

The facility is under construction and 80 percent complete.

No fuel is onsite.

Neither the licensee nor Rill plan to issue a press release.

The State of Illinois hos been informed.
