MONTICELID NUCLEAR GENERATING PLAhT Docket No. 50-263 License No. DPR-22 RCIC Steam Line High Area Temperature Switch bh1 function A condition occurred at the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant which we are reporting to your office in accordance with Section 6.7.B.1, Abnomal Occurrence -

Reports, of Appendix A, Technical Specifications, of Provisional Operating License DPR-22.

On January 29, 1974, while performing a quarterly surveillance test, one of sixteen RCIC Steam Line High Area Temperature switches was found to trip at 205'F. Section 3.2.1, of the Technical Specifications requires the RCIC Steam Line High Area Temperature switches to be set at <200*F. This occurrence did not affect safe operation since radundant switches at the same location were tested and found to trip at the desired trip setting.

A sinilar failure on an identical HPCI system instrument occurred on October 2, 1973, and was reported to your office on October 12, 1973. As a result of the two failures an investigation into the operation of the temperature switches has been initiated. No further action with respect to the tw failures is planned until the results of the investigation are available.
