h/N0 Northem States Power Company 414 Nicollet Mall Minneapohs. Minnesota 55401 Telephone 1612) 330-5500 Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant P. O. Box 600 Monticello, Minnesota 55362-0600 October 25, 1983 Mr. J. G. Keppler, Director Region III Office of Inspection and Enforcement U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Keppler,

MONTICELLO NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT Docket No. 50-263 License No. DPR-22 While recovering from a scram on October 24, 1983, it was determined that the trip coil for #11 Reactor Recirculation MG Set drive breaker had failed, such that the breaker would not trip automatically.

Failure of the Reactor Recirculation MG Set to trip during single loop operation has the potential of affecting loop differential pressure which is used as input to LPCI loop selection logic.

The trip Luil is manufactured by General Electric, Catalog Number 006174582G001 and is designed for 125 VDC operation in a General Electric Magne-Blast Circuit Breaker, type AMH-4.76-250-0D.

The trip coil was replaced with an identical coil and was tested satisfactorily.

Investigation into the cause of the trip coil failure is continuing.

This occurrence is being reported in accordance with Technical Specification 6.7.B.1.e.

Yours very truly, Y
