Dear Mr. Collins:

River Bend Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-458 Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU) notified Region IV on February 23, 1982 of a concern with PS-10RS spring nuts that may be potentially reportable under 10 CFR 50.55(e). This deficiency with spring nuts concerned a difference found in serration patterns of PS-10RS spring nuts supplied to GSU when compared to nuts previously supplied. As stated in our March 24, 1982 letter, a preliminary test has been perfonned which resulted in a hold on the installa-tion of unqualified spring nuts.

GSU has not completed the investigation to determine if the deficiency meets the reporting criteria set forth in 10 CFR 50.55(e)1. GSU anticipates that this investigation will be completed and an interim or final status report will be provided by June 4,1982.
