Dear Mr. Collins:

ain River Bend Station Unit 1 4 Docket No. 50-458 -- N On March 4, 1982, Gulf Stat es Utilities (GSU) informed Region IV of a deficiency potentially reportable under 10CFR50.55(e). In a letter to orr Architect Engineer, Stone & Webster (S&W), dated February 12, 1982, Parker Hannifin Corporation identified a total of 10 stainless steel forgings (Part Number 6-6-6 MBT-SS) that had been delivered to River Bend from a suspect heat lot (Traceability Code No.

251 F). Forgings from this heat lot may contain a forging lap which exists through approximately 30 percent of the fitting wall. These fittings have been returned to Parker Hannifin for re-inspection and replacement if found defective.

GSU's determination of reportability is inconclusive at this time.

GSU understands that Parker Hannifin's preliminary investigatione indicate that defects are caused by a material flow in the forge die and that the forging process is under review. The heat lot has been recalled. GSU will notify Region IV of the status of the investigation by April 30, 1982.

Very truly yours, J. E. Booker Manager-Engineering & Licensing River Bend Nuclear Group JEB/ /kt cc: Director of Inspection & Enforcement U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 gfg
