Docket No. 50-458 Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU) notified the Region IV I&E Office by telephone on February 23, 1982, of a concern with Power Strut PS-10RS spring nuts that may be potentially reportable under 10CFR50.55(e). This deficiency with spring nuts concerned a difference found in serration patterns of PS-10RS spring nuts supplied

+o GSU when compared to nuts previously supplied. Preliminary testing of the new narrower pattern revealed that 15 out of 16 failed to hold sufficiently when used on 10 gauge channel. GSU had previously qualified the PS-10RS nut for use in this service, to replace PS-9227RS-1/2 spring nuts. The PS-9227RS-1/2 spring nuts were the subject of a previous reportabic deficiency. Installation of unqualified spring nuts has been stopped.

i l GSU is corresponding with Power Strut thru our Architect Engineer,

Stone & Webster to determine if the deficiency meets the reporting criteria set forth in 10CFR50.55(e)(1). Our investigation has not been completed. Additional information will be provided by April 30, 1982.
