Dear Mr. Collins:

~4 gg,g .cgy;n eprJa 6 uaan w:.WW River Bend Station Unit 1 g Docket No. 50-458 4 N #

On February 17, 1982, Gulf States Utilities (GSU) informed Region IV of a deficiency potentially reportable under 10CFR50.55(e). During radiographic examination of a field weld, subsurface linear indications were discovered in adjacent base metal of an RCIC pipe flange that extended to the weld.

GSU committed to inform Region IV of the status of its investigation within 30 days. GSU has not yet indentified any other flanges with similar problems, and the investigation with General Electric is underway to determine if a reportable condition exists.

GSU will notify Region IV of the outcome or status of the investigation by May 17, 1982.
