Dear Mr. Collins:

[ Q River Bend Station-Unit 1 Docket No. 50-458 g On December 2, 1981, Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU) notified the NRC Region IV Office of a potentially reportable condition concerning the interpretation of radiographs performed by B. F. Shaw Company. In our letter of December 24, 1981, GSU reported that our investigation of the acceptability of the radiographic techniques and interpretation criteria used by B. F. Shaw was not complete and that the status of our investigation would be provided by February 19, 1982. This letter fulfills that commitment and provides the status of the activities completed to date.

GSU and its architect engineer, Stone & Webster (S&W), evaluated.

the radiographic techniques used by B. F. Shaw and also called in a third party to perform an additional review. The third party review was completed and the report was evaluated by GSU and S&W. GSU and S&W management met on February 19, 1982 and discussed the options available for further action. At this meeting it was determined that additional information is required in order to decide what course of action is appropriate.

GSU will provide the NRC with a further status report within 90 days.

Sincerely, J. E. Booker Manager-Engineering & Licensing River Bend Nuclear Group Q /kt Y ,
