I yee River Bend Station Unit 1 -

N 4' Docket No. 50-458 Gulf States Utilities (GSU) infarmed the NRC of a potentially reportable condition concerning A-500 Grade B steel in pipe support application on September 14, 1981. In a letter dated October 12, 1981, GSU concluded that the reported loss of elongation in A-500 steel was no longer a concern but that GSU was reviewing documentation to assure that A-500 steel received on-site met the specified ASTM requirements, as manufactured. This letter is the status report GSU committed to provide by November 11, 1981.

Gulf States Utilities has not concluded its review of the documentation to determine the acceptability of the A-500 steel, as manufactured. Our review, to date, indicates a potential problem with the Bergen-Patterson QA prograni that governs the documentation.

GSU will advise the NRC of the status of our investigations by December 11, 1981.
