On December 4, 1981, Gulf States Utilities (GSU) noti e Region IV Office of a concern potentially reportable under 10CFR50.55(e) concerning the use of an incorrect weld technique sheet on 96 safety related assemblies in the Standby Cooling Tower. This is the 30 day status report GSU committed to provide.

GSU has completed its investigation and has concluded that the problem does not meet the qualifying criteria for reportability under 10CFR50.55(e) because had the problem gone uncorrected, the safety of ,

operationr, of the plant would not have been adversely affected.

Tensile testing of " sister" assemblies demonstrated strength well above the required minimum. No corrective action is required for '

welds completed with the incorrect technique sheet. The correct technique sheet is in use now. This concludes GSU's response on this matter.
