On November 12, 1981, Gulf States Utilities (GSU) notified the Region IV Office of a concern potentially reportable under 10CFR50.55(e) concerning the intermittent omission of screw lock compound on GE AKR-30 and AKR-50 breaker closing spring assemblies in Category II breakers.

GSU uses similar breakers in Category I service. On December 11, 1981, GSU requested and Mr. Crossman of Region IV granted, an extension until i January 8, 1982, for GSU to provide the committed status report on this subject.

GSU has completed its investigation and concluded the problem does not meet the qualifying criteria for reportability under 10CFR50.55(e) since there is no known deficiency in River Bend Station Category I equipment. The Category I River Bend AKR-30/50 breakers have not been .

shipped and suppliers have been advised to check these breakers at the factory and correct the potential deficiency before shipment. This concludes GSU's response on this matter.
