Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

River Bend Station-Unit 1 Y Docket No. 50 h58 On September 3, 1981 Gulf States Utilities Company notified your staff by telephone of a deficiency that is potentially reportable under Title 10 Code of Federal Regulation Part 50.55(e) concerning improperly manufactured valve springs in the two diesel generators supplied by Delaval. This letter serves as a thirty day status report as committed by Gulf States Utilities in the telephone notification.

Description of the Deficiency Transamerica Delaval Inc. notified the USNRC in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR Part 21.P1(2)(b) that sixty-four diesel engine valve springs manufactured by Melrose Spring and Tool works way not have been shot-peened properly.

Safety Implication ,

The shot-peening is necessary to relieve external stresses incurred in cold-working the spring vire. The lack of shot-peening could lend to fatigue, which then vould affect engine availability /per-formance. Two diesel engines supplied to River Bend Station for the safety related diesel generator system were in production at Delaval's facilities during the time period that the springs were available for installation on the engine cylinder head assemblies.

Corrective Action Taken No corrective actions have been taken to date because it is not known if the River Bend diesels have the questionable springs.

Within the next 30 days the diesels vill be inspected.

If the questionable springs are found, it is currently antici-pated that they will be removed and replaced with properly s:.ot-peened springs.

At this time the two Delaval supplied diesel generators for River Benu are not in service and vill not be required to perform any safety function until after fuel loading. At no time was the health and safety of the public threatened. A follow-up report vill be forwarded to you within 30 days.

Sincerely, b
