Office of Inspection and Enforcement U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II - Suite 3100 101 Marietta Street Atlanta, Georgia 30303

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

HARTSVILLE NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS A1 AND A2 - PPV SHI5LD WALL WELD DEFICIENCIES (NCR'S HNP-A-087, HNP-A-108, HNP-A-109, SX-19)

Initial notification of the subject deficiency was made to R. W.

Wright, NRC-OIE, Region II, on February 15, 1980. The first and second interim reports were submitted on March 13, and May 19, 1980, respectively. In compliance with paragraph 50.55(e) of 10 CFR Part 50, this is the third interim report on the subject deficiency.

Repairs will be made to the unit Al structure as stated in our previous reports. TVA's investigation into this condition revealed a similar defect on the unit A2 structure (NCR HNP-A-108).

Inspection of the unit B1 shield wall which has not been shipped to TVA revealed deficient welds also (NCR SX-19). Additionally, TVA has found what appears to be a slugged weld on tier 3 of the unit Al shield wall (NCR HNP-A-109). The investigation into this condition is continuing and repairs will be made as required. TVA anticipates transmitting the final report on or before December 24, 1900. If you have any questions, please call Jim Domer at FTS 857-2014 Very truly yours, ENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY
