UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON. D.C. 2055fH)()()1 The Honorable Robert G. Torricelli United States Senate Washington, DC 20510-3003
Dear Senator Torricelli:
January 6, l.998 I am responding to your letter of December 12, 1997, to NRC's Regional Administrator, Mr. Hubert Miller, concerning the possible restart of Salem Unit 1 and the related questions that both you and the NRC have received from Mr. Kyran Connor, Office of County Counsel, County of Cape May, New Jersey.
I have enclosed a copy of our response to Mr. Connor in which we address the matters he has raised on behalf of the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders. I believe our letter was responsive to their request for information. However, as delineated in the enclosure,' we plan to conduct public meetings near the plant to facilitate overall public attendance and do not plan to hold a restart meeting in Cape May County. We will inform the Board of public meetings involving the restart of Unit 1 and will continue to appropriately respond to all public requests for information.
Mr. Michael Callahan, in our Office of Congressional Affairs, will keep your office informed on restart activities and can be reached at (301) 41 5-1776.
