DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT The following is a description of an event which occurred at the St. Lucie Plant on August 3 and 4, 1989. This information was reported to Steve Scholfield of EPA by Ron Hix of FPL Environmental Affairs on August 7, 1989. Mr. Scholfield requested that this written report be submitted with the appropriate DMR.

On the dates and times listed below, the St. Lucie Unit 1 discharge canal temperature exceeded the 113'F limit allowed for normal operation.

Au ust 3 1989 Au ust 4 1989 Time ~Tem Time ~Tem 1300 hrs 114'F 1400 hrs 115'F 1400 114 1500 114 1500 114 1600 114 1600 115 1700 114 1700 115 1800 114 1900 115 During these periods, St. Lucie Unit 1 was experiencing severe condenser fouling. The St. Lucie Plant. NPDES Permit allows 117'F at the discharge terminus under these conditions. Unit 1 was down-powered the evenings of August 4, 1989 and August 5, 1989 to clean condenser water-boxes. Since that time discharge canal temperatures have returned to below 113'F.
