OF ANNUAL ASSESSMENT MEETING WITH PSEG NUCLEAR, LLC (PSEG)
On May 5, 2009, at 7:00 p.m., the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) conducted an annual assessment meeting with PSEG Nuclear, LLC (PSEG) at the Salem 911/Emergency Services Center, Woodstown, NJ. The NRC requested the meeting to discuss its assessment of PSEG safety performance at Salem and Hope Creek for the period January 1 through December 31, 2008, as documented in the NRC annual assessment letters for Salem and Hope Creek dated March 4, 2009.
The NRC presentation included a discussion of the Reactor Oversight Process, 2008 performance assessment results, and an overview of the remaining planned inspections at Salem and Hope Creek for calendar year 2009. The NRCs overall assessment was that PSEG operated Salem and Hope Creek in a manner that preserved public health and safety and the environment. PSEG stated that they were in general agreement with the NRCs assessment and discussed planned areas for improvement.
A number of local government officials, PSEG employees, local media, and the general public observed this meeting and were offered the opportunity to ask the NRC questions regarding PSEGs performance and the role of the agency in ensuring safe plant operations. The question and answer period accommodated all individuals who desired to speak or ask questions after the business portion of the meeting was completed. Feedback forms submitted by the public following the meeting will be evaluated.
