South Texas Project Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Response to Open Item 498/87 31-01 Subsequent to the issuance of Open Item 87-31-01, indicated i Reference 1, the reliability of STP's Standby Diesel Generators was reviewed'

during the week of June 22, 1987. During this review all aspects of engine testing and operation were examined and found to be acceptab.le to Mr. E. Tomlinson (USNRC). However, four additional Open Items related.to the diesels were generate . Perform an additional endurance run of approximately 100 hours0.00116 days <br />0.0278 hours <br />1.653439e-4 weeks <br />3.805e-5 months <br />

- for each engine. (Open Item 87-39-05)

Status: The additional endurance runs have been successfully performe , Obtain the failure reports for engine #11 " cracked" injection nozzle valve holder and " bound" fuel injection pump control rac (Open Item 87-39-06)

Status: A. The vendor supplied failure analysis for the " bound" fuel injection pump was discussed with Mr. E.' Tomlinson (USNRC) on August 6,198 B. The " cracked" injection nozzle holder has been attributed to a failure of the nozzle spray ti Additional analysis is being performed to determine root q
