Mr. Norman W. Curtis-.

Vice President Engineering and Construction (N-4)

2 North Ninth Street Allentown, Pennsylvania 18101 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Inspection 50-387/79-37 This refers to your letter dated March 6, 1980, in response to our letter dated November 19, 1979.

Thank you for informing us of your actions in this matter.

These actions will be examined during a subsequent inspection of your licensed program.

We have the following comment with respect to item 4 of your March 6, 1980 letter.

As stated in our Inspection Report No. 50-387/79-37, it is our position that a calibration standard containing representative welds must be used during actual weld examinations.

This standard will provide a block acoustically representative of the area being examined.

We continue to feel strongly that this is the best demonstrable way of'ssuring adequate sound penetration of this geometry so as to detect discontinuities of concern.

If, for any reason, you do not plan to use such a calibration standard, please inform us pr omptly.

Your cooperation with us is appreciated.
