. Inservice Inspection of Socket Welds Unit's 1 and-2 (73753B)
This work effort was a followup to that documented in Inspection Report No. 280,281/88-39 where the inspector reviewed the licensee's inspection results, plans for repair and observed repairs (grinding) performed on certain weld At the close of that inspection on October 21, 1988, the inspector communicated several observations and concerns to the license During this inspection, the inspector met with site management and the licensee's cognizant engineers at the corporate and site leve During this meeting, the licensee provided the following information on the subject socket welds:
0
0 The code of record for the fabrication and testing of socket welds was the USAS B31.1 USA Standard * Code for Pressure Piping, 1967 Edition with winter 1967 Addend Specification NUS-20 Addendum VIII, Field Fab~ication and Erection of Piping, March 8, 1972, was the controlling document for field fabrication, inspection. and testing of these socket weld Subject socket welds were liquid penetrant inspected, as required and the inspection was recorded as a line item on the isometric or weld map, no further NDE information exists on individual welds.
Liquid penetrant examination performed following weld fabrication was used to satisfy preservice inspection requirement /1
In addition, the licensee stated that they had decided to reinspect the rejected we 1 ds using the corporate Leve 1 II I examiner to eva 1 ua te the inspection result This was being done. be<;::aus~ the NOE in~pectors recorded the indications from the PT examination without attempting to interpret/evaluate: -the-i-r.-:f:indings.. *:.We*lds__:-requ.iring: repair.wJll -.be
