NUCLE AR ,CNrft GENER ATION November 1,1985 PGandE Letter No.: HBL-85 052 Mr. Bruce Boger, Acting Chief Operator Licensing Branch, AR-5221 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Re: Docket No. 50-133, OL-DPR-7 Humboldt Bay Power Plant, Unit No. 3 Response to Generic Letter 85-18

Dear Mr. Boger:

Generic Letter 85-18 requests all licensees and applicants for operator licenses to provide the NRC with a schedule for conducting operator examinations for the remainder of the fiscal year through September 30, 1989.

No examinations are planned for Humboldt Bay Unit No. 3.

PGandE is in the process of decommissioning Unit No. 3 in preparation for long term storage (SAFSTOR). PGandE axpects the NRC to approve new Technical Specifications which will eliminate the requirement for Reactor Operator and Senior Operator Licenses. Since these new Technical Specifications should be in use by early 1986, no furt:1er examinations are required. In acccrdance with the SAFSTOR Decommissioning Plan, PGandE will maintain a recertification program.

Any questions regarding this response should be directed to Mr. Robert Prigmore, Training Coordinator, at (707) 443-3787, ext. 220.

Kindly acknowledge receipt of this material on the enclosed copy of this letter and return it in the enclosed addressed envelope.

Sincerely, J. D iffer Enclosure cc: J. B. Martin Humboldt Distribution Service List 0593S/0037K/WJS/1753 p8h I I 8511050200 851101 PDR ADOCM 05000133 V PDR
