May 12, 1998 Mr. Stan Dixon Humboldt County Supervisor,1st District Humboldt County Courthouse 825 5th Street Eureka, California 95501

Dear Mr. Dixon:

On behalf of the staff of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, I would like to express ot,r appreciation for the support you provided for the recent public meeting we held at the Eureka inn on the decommissioning of the Humboldt Bay Power Plant (HBPP). It was an important meeting that dealt with an issue of substantial public interest.

Having an open, constructive dialog with the public in the vicinity of nuclear power plants is an important step in achieving our goal of providing appropriate opportunities for public participation in our regulatory programs. As a locally elected member of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, and the Supervisor for the District in which the HBPP is located, you were well qualified to take an active role in our meeting by serving as the moderator. We appreciate your willingness to perform that important function, and I have received several comrnents on how your participation contributed to the meeting's success.

As noted during the meeting, I am the NRC staff principal point of contact for issues related to the decommissioning of the HBPP. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions, either as an interested citizen or in your capacity as a local government official, on our regulatory programs or how they will be applied to the HBPP decommissioning activities.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY:
