Subject:

Duke Energy Corporation Catawba Nuclear Station, Unit 2 Docket No. 50-414 Licensee Event Report 414/98-005, Revision 1  ;

Please find attached Revision 1 to Licensee Event Report 414/98-005 concerning violation of Technical Specificatie." 3.6.5.3 due to the inoperability of the ice condenser inlet doors caused by ice / frost buildup restricting door movement.

The original LER contained a commitment to perform a remote visual inspection of the Unit 1 beam coolers to verify no  ;

detrimental ice / frost buildup. This inspection was to be done  !

prior to the upcoming Unit 1 End of Cycle 11 (1EOC11) refueling outage. As part of the pre-inspection planning, it was determined that a meaningful inspection, to accurately assess the extent of any ice / frost buildup on the beam coolers and whether ,

any observed ice / frost would actually interfere with ice l condenser lower inlet door opening, could not be done remotely. i Accordingly, the LER has been revised to perform a more limited direct visual inspection.

If there are questions on this revised report, contact G. A. Copp at (803) 831-3622.

This event is considered to be of no significance with respect to the health and safety of the public.

Sincerely, t

  1. N ,
