Subject: Combined Inspection Numbers 50-220/93-16 and 50-410/93-16

This letter refers to the announced safety inspection conducted by Dr. Jason C. Jang of this

office on July 26-30,1993, of activities authorized by NRC License Nos. DPR-63 and NPF-69

at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2, Scriba, New York and to the dit cussion

of our findings held by Dr. Jang with you and other members of your staff at the conclusion of

the inspection.

Areas examined during this inspection included the radioactive liquid and gaseous effluent

controls as described in the NRC Region I Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter.

Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures, and

representative records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector.

Within the scope of this inspection, we noted that you maintained very effective programs and

capabilities to protect the public health and safety and the environment. The management

commitment to maintaining the operability of effluent radiation monitoring systems was

excellent. We noted rurther that the responsible individuals in the Chemistry Departments had

excellent knowledge to implement the above programs. No safety concerns or violations of

NRC requirements were identified.
