Gentlemen:
This is in regard to your request for approval of a primary route to be used for transport of spent reactor fuel as contained in your letters of April 14,1986, May 29,1986, August 27, 1986 and telephone conversations between Mr. Olsen and Charles Hillman of my staff.
The requested route, as nodified and as discussed during the above nentioned telephone conversations, meets the regulatory requirements in accordance with 10 CFR 73.37 and is approved for shipments of spent fuel from Cordova, Illinois through Indiana Kentucky and Tennessee to Lynchburg, Virginia. In the event your carrier is required to deviate from the approved route, please call the contact listed on page two of this letter as soon as possible providing the details.
Arrangements with law enforcement agencies along the route as required by 10 CFR 73.37(a)(2) have been completed by the flRC staff. Data relating to these arrangements and a copy of the approved route are enclosed. This infornation is to be incorporated into your shipment plans and provided to your carrier along with instructions regarding its use.
Please note that assuring highway safety is the responsibility of the y licensee and carrier and our approval is not intended to provide relief in cucoa this reg'ard.
