HbR i 81987 Babcock and Wilcox Company L#fTN: Dr. Paul S. Ayres, Manager Lynchburg Technical Operations Research and Development Division P. O. Box 11165 Lynchburg, VA 24506-11165 Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

REPORT NO. 70-824/86-06 Thank you for your response of February 19, 1987, to our Notice of Violation, issued on January 21, 1987, concerning activities conducted at your Lynchbu:g Research Center. We have evaluated your response and found that it meets the requirements of 10 CFR 2.201. As a result of a telephone conversation on March 9,1987, between A. F. Olsen of your staff and G. L. Troup, Region II Fuel Facilities Project Manager, it is our understanding that Step 1 of the formalization of your Radiation Protection Program, as defined in your letter, will be completed by April 1,1987, and that Step 2 will be completed by June 15, 1987. The schedule for Steps 3-6 will then be developed based on the results of Steps 1 and 2. Further, it is our understanding that the correction proposed for Violation A will include calculational methodology, as well as denote eligibility for bioassay. We will examine the implementation of your corrective actions during future inspections.

We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,
