Noncompliance Notification Catawba Nuclear Station File:- CN-730.10
Dear Sirs:
c This is to notify you of a noncompliance incident at Catawba Nuclear Station. Information related to the incident is as follows:
Discharge The discharge was from a yard drain.which discharges to the intake cove on Lake Wylie.
Cause of Incident i
Approximately 100 gallons of 2000 ppm boron solution overflowed into a yard drain.
Date and Time The incident occurred on Saturday, August 30, 1986 at 12:30 pm. The duration was approximately 50 minutes.
Prevention A return line which connects an ice machine to a storage tank has been moved inside a curbing area and been more securely fastened to the storage tank. Also, the Secondary Containment construction project, scheduled to be complete 1/1/87, would-have prevented this discharge.

e Summary The return line was connected to an ice machine from the roof of the auxiliary building to the storage tank on the ground. The line became disconnected from the tank and fell outside the secondary containment curbing which surrounds the tank. Absorbent material was placed around the yard drain to prevent as much as possible from being released while the line was being reconnected to the tank. The pH of this solution is 9.2 SU. The intake cove was thoroughly investigated and no visible impact was observed.
