Catawba Nuclear Station Follow-up Release Notification - Sodium Nitrite File: C N-702.26, 702.04 ,

Dear Sirs,

Pursuant to 40 CFR 355 (Emergency Planning and Notification), Duke Power Company hereby submits written follow-up notification for the release of sodium nitrite which occurred on September 8,1994.

The release began at approximately 1430 hours0.0166 days
0.397 hours
0.00236 weeks
5.44115e-4 months
and was terminated at 1630 hours0.0189 days
0.453 hours
0.0027 weeks
6.20215e-4 months
. This release occurred as a result of a digging opeiation that accidentally ruptured a cooling system pipe containing the sodiura nitrite as a corrosion inhibitor. The concentration of sodium nitrite in the s)' stem was 2,121 parts per million (ppm), but was constantly being diluted from 11e systems demineralized water makup. A total of approximately 200 pounds of sodium nitrite was released.

The chemical solution flowed across soil into a local yard drain which diverts stormwater to the site conventional waste treatment system. There was no off site release. The spill area was flushed with clean water to ensure that the entire contents of the spill was transported to the treatment system.
